Whatcom Waterway Chinook Fishery

The Whatcom Creek Hatchery has started a fall Chinook program which come from excess eggs produced at the Samish River Hatchery. The forecast for Whatcom Creek is 5,000+ Chinook. These fish are intended for harvest and are not needed for broodstock. This is a wipeout fishery. Therefore, we have opened the Whatcom Waterway and Whatcom Creek to fishing.

The area is split into two areas: outside of the Roeder Ave. bridge and inside the bridge.

Outside the Roeder Ave. bridge the fishing schedule is 4:00 PM Sunday to 4:00 PM Friday.

New this year, commercial fishing is allowed inside the Roeder Ave. bridge upstream to the wooden footbridge downstream of Dupont St. The fishing schedule on the inside of the bridge is 12:01 AM Monday through 4:00 PM Friday. Tribal fishing is not allowed inside on Sundays to avoid gear conflicts with state fisheries.

Be aware that the waterway is actively used by commercial ships. Please use caution.
