Finfish Biologist
Mark Nelson
Mark joined Lummi Natural Resources Harvest Management team
in 2021. He brings over 20 years of fisheries
science and management experience. Mark has
worked all throughout the U.S., from Alaska to the Pacific Islands and has experience
setting national fisheries management policy and guidance for the federal
government.
Mark’s primary
duties at LNR are to ensure the sustainable harvest of Lummi’s finfish resources,
including salmon and halibut. He works to
protect Lummi’s treaty rights to harvest salmon by participating in the North
of Falcon process where salmon harvest levels are set. During the salmon season, Mark can be found
sampling catch in ceremonial and subsistence fisheries as well as commercial
fisheries.
Mark also helps
sustainably manage other finfish fisheries such as halibut. He is also looking for ways to maximize opportunity
and value of the abundant fisheries resources available to Lummi fishermen.
